$30 per half hour lesson, $45/hour, North Portland studio

The act of playing music is one of the few things we can do that involves every region of the brain. From reading notes, directing physical movements, coordinating with other people, anticipating what comes next, and incorporating emotional expression, our minds are completely engaged. These skills open up pathways that can be used in all of our other pursuits, and the practice involved in learning them instills the discipline and focus to help us excel at those pursuits. The neuroscience behind music-making is compelling, but there is also a lifetime of enjoyment to be had in playing your own tunes. Whatever your reasons for learning, it’s never too late (or early!) to start. I offer half-hour beginning lessons in cello, piano, and music theory. My studio policies are listed below, and you can contact me to schedule lessons.

Madrone Studio Policy

2015-2016 academic year

I’m looking forward to a great year of sharing music! Here are a few guidelines to help us have a smooth and successful time. I’m happy to answer any questions or concerns.

  • Lessons will begin and end at the scheduled time. Cello students should arrive 10 minutes before your lesson time so you can unpack your cello before the lesson.
  • Please provide at least 24 hours notice if you need to reschedule your lesson, either by phone or email. No-shows will not be made up. Students may have 3 make-up lessons during the academic year. These will be given during designated weeks in the academic year (see below for the calendar). If you find yourself repeatedly rescheduling, we can discuss a new lesson time.
  • Lessons are $30 for half hour lessons. Payment for the month is due at the last lesson of each month, by check or cash. Should you require other arrangements, please let me know.
  • Practice is an extremely important part of learning an instrument. Students are expected to practice every day, preferably for at least as long as their lesson time. If need be, shorter practices done every day are more effective than one long practice session. For younger students, parents are a big part of making this happen. Please be encouraging!
  • Our calendar roughly follows the public school calendar. Due to our new baby, we will begin a bit later this year, on October 3, and continue through June 4. Single day holidays will not affect lessons. There will be no lessons November 22-29, December 20 – January 1, and March 20-27. Make-up lessons may be scheduled in the weeks of December 28, March 20, and June 5.
